Brand & web design for the construction industry
Websites for builders with standards.
Pillar designs brand identities and websites for custom home builders, developers, renovation firms, and construction-adjacent companies across Vancouver Island and beyond.
Our clients:
Small by design
We'll help your company look as considered as the work you are building.
Founded and operated by Nick Croft and Kaelan Smith, Pillar Labs is intentionally small. That means fewer handoffs, fewer meetings about meetings, and senior attention where it actually matters.
Two years in, we have launched 30+ websites, designed a handful of brand identities, and become a regular call for construction companies on Vancouver Island that care how they show up.

Brand-first work, backed by technical depth.
Most of our clients already have strong reputations. The work we do ensures their brand, identity, and digital presence amplify that trust and set them apart when they're being considered.
Brand Systems
Strategy, identity, and the rules that keep everything from going sideways.
We dig into the business before we design: what you build, who you want more of, why people hire you, and where the current brand is underselling the work. Then we craft a visual identity and brand guidelines doc that brings all your assets together. From logo to colours, messaging, and typography, we capture your company’s essence and set a roadmap your team can follow.
Content Direction
Copywriting, photography, and video — planned before anything else.
Great websites start with strong copy and visuals. We handle copywriting, photography, and video production in-house, so everything from story to visuals is intentionally aligned from day one. This pre-production step lays the foundation that makes the web design and development stages fly, ensuring the finished site feels cohesive, strategic, and genuinely considered.
Web Design
Clean websites that make the work easy to trust.
No lead-gen circus. No ten popups before the page loads. Just a sharp first impression, a strong portfolio, and a site that feels like the company behind it. We design mobile-first, balancing space and flow so everything feels natural on every device. From the letter-spacing of headings to the uniformity of section container widths, we obsess over the micro-decisions that add up to a site that feels “just right” for your brand, and your audience.
Web Development
High-performance builds that future-you will thank you for.
Our websites deliver the best of both worlds: high-performance, interactive design backed by a technical foundation built for speed, reliability, and search-engine visibility. Built entirely in-house, every site is easy to edit, robust, and engineered to support your company as it scales. And with our ongoing Care Plan, your site stays current and running smoothly on the latest tech — you’ll never need a costly rebuild again!

When the next stage needs to look like the next stage
The goal is simple: make good companies easier to understand, trust, and remember.
How we work
We ask a lot of questions before we touch the pixels.
Figure out what makes the business worth choosing.
Before anything, we look at what the company sells, why clients choose it, where the current brand is falling short, and what the next version needs to make obvious.
Design the clearest version of it.
We shape the identity, website, copy, image direction, and motion around one job: help people understand the quality of the company faster.
Build it properly, so it can keep growing.
The finished site should be fast, easy to maintain, and structured for the next round of projects, services, team members, and markets.
Best for companies that care a little too much.
Custom home builders are our centre of gravity, with developers, renovators, architects, engineers, and select trades close behind. The common thread is a premium offer, a serious respect for craft, and enough ambition to want the brand to catch up.
FAQ
The stuff people usually ask next.
What happens after you launch my website?
Every website we build transitions into the Pillar Care Plan ($100/mo). It includes done-for-you hosting, proactive site maintenance, SEO monitoring, and minor support requests like small content edits, portfolio additions, testimonial additions, image swaps, and digital marketing advice when you need it. It's not very glamorous, but it keeps the tech current and running smoothly, avoids invoicing for tiny amounts of work, and helps avoid the painful rebuild that happens when a site is ignored for five years.
Do you only work with the construction industry?
Yes, for the most part. Very occasionally we will take on a unique project outside our chosen niche if it interests us and gives us a chance to try something new, learn something useful, or stretch the studio in a worthwhile direction.
Do you guys do SEO or other digital marketing?
Mostly no, by design. We are not building a one-stop-shop agency where quality quietly slips because everyone is doing everything. For SEO, we handle the technical side and bake a healthy amount of on-page best practices into our site builds. We do not offer ongoing SEO retainers, write blog posts, run ads, or manage social media, but we can introduce you to people who do. Our lane is brand design, web design, web development, and web maintenance, with photography and video becoming a useful add-on to that work. Importantly, we also structure our Content Management Systems in a way that allows outside digital marketing professionals—like content writers, ad managers, or SEO specialists—to do their job as it relates to the website, so you and your team aren’t limited in the future.
How involved are Nick and Kaelan?
Very. Pillar is intentionally small, so strategy, design direction, technical execution, and final quality control stay close to the founders. You won’t be handed off to a mystery team in another time zone. Nick, based in Victoria, will be your primary point of contact and leads the content stages, including photography and video. Kaelan, based in the Cowichan Valley, brings nearly 10 years of experience and handles the design and development work. Their minds work quite differently from each other, but they share similar values and taste. That combination, along with close collaboration throughout the process, makes for a balanced, effective partnership that raises the quality of every project.
What does it cost to work with you?
It depends on what you’re looking for — whether that’s just a website, a full brand identity, or if you’d like photography or video included as well. A standalone website typically ranges from $6k to $30k, with most clients landing between $10k and $14k. That puts us well above what a student or junior freelancer would charge, but you’ll generally find we’re more affordable than most agencies operating at the level we do. Like most of our clients, we focus on delivering the best value rather than the lowest cost. Brand identity projects usually start around $5k and scale up based on how many assets you need and how many people need to be involved in the process. For photography and video, our rates are in line with typical industry costs and can be added to your project as needed.
